Sam's political blog regular comments on UK and world politics
I have had an interesting life - being dyslexic, in an era when that particular problem was not understood, supposedly blighted my early years. But I always think that this affliction bought fruit in abundance - the fact I could not follow a predictable career path allowed me to break away and become a free spirit. It led me down strange paths that included both success and failure with the associated financial status.
As my political blog suggests I spent far too much time in bars as a customer and then for a long period working and managing them. I have sat with great men over port and cigars as well as the poorest and most downtrodden over a palinka and sor (schnapps and beer). I know people who have made large sums of money - some legal and some maybe not so. I have chased, shot and lured wild creatures but I also understand their habitat and their lives - I would be a big supporter of Greenpeace if it were not so one-dimensional. I have seen clueless pollution as well as deliberate abuse of the planet in pursuit of simple self-interest. I believe the biggest threat to our planet is simple - people. We are too many and too greedy. However it is that very greed, that very desire to get ahead that has driven us to make enormous strides in living standards. It is also that same greed that condemns so many to abject poverty. It is in the poorest countries that the often mega rich leach off and abuse the have nots condemning them to perpetual poverty. Feudalism is alive and well in many parts of the world.
So I suppose all that is a way of saying I have been around a bit and as anybody who has travelled will tell you - it is educational. Once I retired from full time employment I had an opportunity not to just look but think - think why and what if and I thought I had some input to make.
At that point the challenge is: how do you send your message in a way people will both read it and absorb it? I am no carefully funded think tank, publishing learned thoughts. But I like a good story and have read many. I had written earlier books - a thriller and a humorous book about dogs as well as spending ten years writing about food and travel. So to take a quote from my youth – ‘I want to tell you a story or two.’ They are good stories but they are more than that - they have reason and a message. You may not agree; but you will enjoy the journeys.
